The Jubilee 2025, proclaimed by Pope Francis with the Bull of Indiction "Spes non confundit" on May 9, 2024, began on December 24, 2024 with the opening of the Holy Door in St. Peter's Basilica. This Holy Year, which will end on January 6, 2026, represents an extraordinary opportunity for spiritual renewal and pilgrimage to the Eternal City.
The Jubilee: History and Significance 
The Jubilee has ancient roots in Jewish tradition, where every fiftieth year was designated as a "Holy Year," marked by the forgiveness of debts, the liberation of slaves, and the return of lands. This concept was adopted by the Catholic Church, with the first Christian Jubilee declared by Pope Boniface VIII in 1300. Since then, the Jubilee has been celebrated periodically, typically every 25 years, providing the faithful with an opportunity for spiritual renewal through pilgrimages and acts of charity.
2025 Events: Opportunities for All
The most evocative and well-known rite is certainly the opening of the Holy Door, which is opened only during the Jubilee year, in the 4 main major basilicas of Rome: St. Peter's, St. John Lateran, St. Paul Outside the Walls and Santa Maria Maggiore. The first to be opened is St. Peter's Basilica, the other doors are opened in the following days and remain open until the end of the Jubilee when they are walled up again.
During 2025, approximately 30 million pilgrims from all over the world are expected in the Capital, ordinary people but also many diplomatic delegations and representatives of civil, military and religious life from the entire Globe.
